Business of Victimhood

Over the last month there was been a world wide condemnation of India over attacks on places of worship belonging to the Christians. India in general and Hindus in particular were blamed by all n sundry. The debate went global and a verdict on India and Hindus was passed even before the investigation was over.

Post investigation , here is what was found

Then came twin bomb blasts that rocked the prestigious Belur Mutt setup by Swami Vivekananda which is the heart of the Ramkrishna movement.... and there was silence all around. Its surprising that the news did not even feature on TV in India.

I believe the 'Business of Victimhood' which drives news is a recession free, multi billion dollar industry ... here are the primary stakeholders in this global business

  • NGOs - To drive top line , NGOs need stories... of victims in duress , in urgent need of monetary support to stand up and fight against the 'evil'. A case against world famous activist Teesta Setelvad is underway. It is claimed the Teesta leveraged gut wrenching stories of victims of the Gujarat 2002 riots. The stories were used to get many a wealthy donors to cough up significant amount of money. Its is alleged that the funds never reached the victims and was instead used for shopping ...
  • Donors - Donors need validation that they are supporting a just cause. What better than steady dose of stories from a so called 3rd world country ..
  • News Channels - With ARPUs on a decline in India , revenue from content syndication is the #1 growth opportunity. If I was an editor. I would be pushing my reporters to get stories which can easily monetised in international markets ...
There are many more players in this market of victimhood.

Point is - a stone thrown at a minority place of worship is more marketable world wide than twin bomb blasts at Swami Vivekananda's mutt...

So whats the solution ... its in Swami Vivekanand's life and his message ...organisation is power.

The fact that the Hindu society is not well organised is its primary weakness ... so arise , awake .. for no power in the universe can withhold from any nation anything she truly deserves

Manohar - One who could win hearts and minds

They say that it is easy to defeat anyone, winning people over is the most difficult thing to do. Manohar Parrikar true to his name dedicated his life to winning people over. My first interaction with Manohar Parikkar was 5 years ago. Elections had been announced and Manohar Parikkar was asked to address IT professionals living in and around Outer Ring Road in Bangalore. New Horizon College was the venue. On that lazy Sunday, I managed to show up at the venue 15 before time. Politicians are known to arrive late but Manohar Parrikar was already there mingling with the IT crowd. He speech consisted of 2-3 stories with foksy humor and wisdom. He wanted the IT crowd to engage in politics, to participate in nation building, I still remember his story "Once upon a time, Goa was known for the best watermelons. Every year post the harvest season, farmers in every village would invite people to taste the best watermelons for free. There was only one condition, they had to spit ou...

Mahaghatbandhan Meltdown

Over the last 9 months, regional leaders had worked very hard to build an anti-Modi front. They did not contest seats, swallowed pride and also shared a platform with the very parties against whom they had contested all their lives. These regional parties did all this with only one hope - survival. They believed that if they all came together, they could put up a credible fight against Modi in 2019. It would be painful for each one of them to concede seats but at least survival was possible. The Mahaghatbandhan strategy was put to test during the bypolls. Vote banks were combined; lifelong enemies (BSP-SP) came together and the BJP was defeated in the bypolls. Mahaghatbahndhan despite its inherent contradictions seemed to work. Desperation was the binding glue. NDA, on the other hand, seemed to lose friends. The Shiv Sena remains miffed as it is relegated to a supporting role, TDP walked out as it was unable to take on YSR at the local level. On top of this, media build a ...
