Trump - Blessing for India

There are numerous reports of the Trump administration banning H1B visas for professionals. Market reacted sharply and a billion dollars worth of market cap was wiped off. Trump's policy of ' Hire American, Buy American' is also likely to scare away students.

While Trump may think his policies are helping America, he has ended up doing a big favour to Indian IT industry, families and our country at large

1) IT Services companies took off in the 90s on the value proposition of cost arbitrage i.e. shipping skilled Indian engineers at 25% of US costs and milking huge margins. This was called 'body shopping'. This was followed up with the 'Onshore-Offshore' model i.e. have only small teams at customer locations in the US which gets worked done by a large offshore teams in India. Margins increased and so did employment in India. As large US multinationals setup their own base in India, this model is now falling apart. IT Services companies are looking for a breakthrough innovation in their business model. This innovation is Artificial Intelligence driven automation i.e using technology trained and supervised by humans to get the work done. Monetisation in this new age is not based on people but on outcomes. Visas are inconsequential in this new age of services. The ban will only force IT companies to accelerate their AI journey. Doubling wages will also ensure that onsite consultants move up the value chain ... its a win- win for the industry. Thank You Mr Trump for forcing us to move up the chain ...

2) Families - Since reservations in the 1990s limited the opportunities for higher castes in India , going abroad was the most popular escate. This put a tremendous economic burden on parents who were nearing retirement but had to spend tens of lakhs on their kids. With the ban, as less students apply for visas, more US educational institutes will have to open up in India to cater to the huge youth market which wants to acquire skills and knowledge. In a decade India will be a bigger and a better market for American educational institutes than their own home ...Thank You Mr Trump for boosting the savings of the Indian middle class and sending your best universities to India.

3) Lastly ... India will emerge as the largest democracy where people from all faiths can live and chase their dreams ...... when people think of the land of the free and the home of brave, it will be India.

God Bless America for electing President Trump for when all is said and done ... it will be Mera Bharat Mahan !!

Manohar - One who could win hearts and minds

They say that it is easy to defeat anyone, winning people over is the most difficult thing to do. Manohar Parrikar true to his name dedicated his life to winning people over. My first interaction with Manohar Parikkar was 5 years ago. Elections had been announced and Manohar Parikkar was asked to address IT professionals living in and around Outer Ring Road in Bangalore. New Horizon College was the venue. On that lazy Sunday, I managed to show up at the venue 15 before time. Politicians are known to arrive late but Manohar Parrikar was already there mingling with the IT crowd. He speech consisted of 2-3 stories with foksy humor and wisdom. He wanted the IT crowd to engage in politics, to participate in nation building, I still remember his story "Once upon a time, Goa was known for the best watermelons. Every year post the harvest season, farmers in every village would invite people to taste the best watermelons for free. There was only one condition, they had to spit ou...

Mahaghatbandhan Meltdown

Over the last 9 months, regional leaders had worked very hard to build an anti-Modi front. They did not contest seats, swallowed pride and also shared a platform with the very parties against whom they had contested all their lives. These regional parties did all this with only one hope - survival. They believed that if they all came together, they could put up a credible fight against Modi in 2019. It would be painful for each one of them to concede seats but at least survival was possible. The Mahaghatbandhan strategy was put to test during the bypolls. Vote banks were combined; lifelong enemies (BSP-SP) came together and the BJP was defeated in the bypolls. Mahaghatbahndhan despite its inherent contradictions seemed to work. Desperation was the binding glue. NDA, on the other hand, seemed to lose friends. The Shiv Sena remains miffed as it is relegated to a supporting role, TDP walked out as it was unable to take on YSR at the local level. On top of this, media build a ...
