Beefy Politics

In the last 6 months no other event has caught the attention of the liberals in India than the Dadri incident. The incident as reported by the media claims that an innocent man was murdered for slaughtering a calf and eating its beef.

Despiste a ton of outrage and yelling, it now appears that

1) There is no mention of beef at all in the FIR filed in the case by UP police. You can read the report here.
2) The report sent by the UP government to the Central govt ( which is supposedly secular) also does not mention 'beef' at all. You can read the report from here.

So after a week of hue and cry, all we have is that the man was killed on rumours of eating beef. One would expect senior journalists to verify the story before making it a headline.

None the less,  that story shaken the political world. One would have expected that the the liberal secular opposition would seize the opportunity to put the BJP on the back foot. But its the secular parties such as SP and RJD that are feeling the heat ... here is why

Both Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav have build their political careers on the consolidation of the Yadav-Muslim vote bank.

The Yadavs are the decedents of Lord Krishna (the Yahuvanshi race). Nothing is revered more to a Yaduvanshi than Krishna and by association his love and respect for cows. There is no way any Yadav leader can get away by calling for freedom to eat beef. This will not go well with their Muslim vote bank for which beef is a staple diet.

So you have a checkmate scenario .... beef and related issues has the potential to break this Muslim -Yadav vote bank for the good,  undoing years of effort put my Lalu and Mulayam.

Secondly the constitution of India under Article 48 prohibits slaughter of cows. 24 Indian states have laws that prevent slaughter of cows. Supreme Court in 2006 has upheld this constitutional clause making it easy for state to pass laws that ban cow slaughter. Any one making appeals to encourage cow slaughter is going against the constitution of India and the laws passed in the states.

I do not understand why a lot of BJP supporters are getting agitated over the beef issue ... its in BJP's own interest to dismantle the Muslim Yadav vote bank.  Lastly why agitate when the constitution is in your favour.....BJP MLAs and Spokespersons should learn a lesson from the greatest Yaduvanshi ever ....Shri Krishna .... do not fight an unnecessary war ...if forced to pick a side .... take that of dharma (in this case our constitution)

Manohar - One who could win hearts and minds

They say that it is easy to defeat anyone, winning people over is the most difficult thing to do. Manohar Parrikar true to his name dedicated his life to winning people over. My first interaction with Manohar Parikkar was 5 years ago. Elections had been announced and Manohar Parikkar was asked to address IT professionals living in and around Outer Ring Road in Bangalore. New Horizon College was the venue. On that lazy Sunday, I managed to show up at the venue 15 before time. Politicians are known to arrive late but Manohar Parrikar was already there mingling with the IT crowd. He speech consisted of 2-3 stories with foksy humor and wisdom. He wanted the IT crowd to engage in politics, to participate in nation building, I still remember his story "Once upon a time, Goa was known for the best watermelons. Every year post the harvest season, farmers in every village would invite people to taste the best watermelons for free. There was only one condition, they had to spit ou...

Mahaghatbandhan Meltdown

Over the last 9 months, regional leaders had worked very hard to build an anti-Modi front. They did not contest seats, swallowed pride and also shared a platform with the very parties against whom they had contested all their lives. These regional parties did all this with only one hope - survival. They believed that if they all came together, they could put up a credible fight against Modi in 2019. It would be painful for each one of them to concede seats but at least survival was possible. The Mahaghatbandhan strategy was put to test during the bypolls. Vote banks were combined; lifelong enemies (BSP-SP) came together and the BJP was defeated in the bypolls. Mahaghatbahndhan despite its inherent contradictions seemed to work. Desperation was the binding glue. NDA, on the other hand, seemed to lose friends. The Shiv Sena remains miffed as it is relegated to a supporting role, TDP walked out as it was unable to take on YSR at the local level. On top of this, media build a ...
