Got my Kindle delivered today and altough its been only a few hours here's how Kindle works in Bangalore, India
a) Purchase: I bought the Kindle Global Edition using my Indian credit card and got it shipped to a friend in the US who got it for me to Bangalore . Works out to Rs 13,000 as i saved on shipping and duties.
b) Packaging is very neat , as Amazon claiming on the package - its a frustration free package , easy to get to your kindle in less than 60 seconds.
c) Kindle ships with a US charger which is not much of an issue for folks in Banaglore as most homes have a converter of some kind. You can also charge via USB of your computer .
d) Charging & Controls : Got the Kindle charged up , the Kindle quick start guide popped up . All controls are very intuitive and you can skip the quick start guide. Its was only seconds and i was at ease with my Kindle.
e) Whispernet access : Kindle did not automatically detect the service provider in Banaglore. After repeated attempts when i could not connect to Whispernet , i emailed Amazom support desk . Response was quick , punch a code '311' in the setting menu and manually search and select networks . Kindle detected most of the popular netwoks - Vodafone , Airtel etc . Cellone 3G also showed up but i could not connect to it . I settled for Vodofaone and in a couple of minutes i was on Vodafone EDGE.
f) My first book : Its was easy to buy my first book via Wispernet , its as easy as buying stuff on Amazon . Its took less than 2 minutes to get the book via Vodadone EDGE .
g) Second / Third Book : To save $2 on the International charge , i purchased a couple of more books from my computer , the books can be downloaded to the computer in Amzon proprietery format . Connect the Kindle via the USB to you computer and copy/paste the book to Kindle . The book automatically pops up in your Home screen on the Kindle .
Bottom line : The first few hours have been great and buying books could never be easier .
Stay tuned as i use the Kindle for a more detailed review .
